Thanksgiving 2010 (for real this time)
So the move is complete. The cat is totally freaked out, and we are no where near unpacked (in fact, we’re lucky the bed is together). The move went really smoothly (except for one particularly tricky moment when we had to move the new couch in through the basement window because it wouldn't fit down the stairs. EEK!)
On Thursday morning we were up early to head to Oconomowoc to see Carolyn and Jim (the in-laws). So we packed up what we could (what wasn’t stowed away somewhere in some box) and piled into the car on the our way. As we pulled out of the driveway, I put my sunglasses on and Paul decided he might like his too, so I stopped the car. I pulled the keys out of the ignition and handed them over to him. As he was walking up to the door, I realized my HUGE mistake – I don’t have a key to our new house. That’s right, I was an idiot and hit the lock on the door knob and happily left our very safe house. Since we were taking my car, Paul didn’t bother to grab his keys and I hadn’t put a new key on my set. I had just locked us out of our brand new house. So no sunglasses to Paul and a call to the locksmith later we were on our way to Paul’s mom’s. The locksmith agreed to meet us at the house when we got home, so we didn’t have to delay our trip at all.
We had a nice quiet Thanksgiving in Oconomowoc. Jim came out a few times to say hi and for dinner. Unfortunately, he wasn’t feeling well so he slept a lot of the time. :( We had a nice traditional turkey dinner, with a few gluten free options (gluten free stuffing for Paul, he says it was awesome) plus a new recipe for mashed potatoes from the culinary geniuses at America's Test Kitchen. (If you don't have this book, you should definitely get it. Just saw this new one too, that might have to be next on our list of cookbooks to buy.) These potatoes weren't in that book, but instead of boiling the potatoes in water, you boil them in HALF & HALF! It's AMAZING! So after dinner, we all had a slice of the Sweet Potato Pie I got from our WITNESS Teaching Artist, Rose McGee. Talk about the best pie you've ever eaten! YUM! *Note: I didn't have to feel guilty about any of this, milk is good for baby's development, as are sweet potatoes, right? Ha ha!
We spent the next morning doing some decorating. I had the pleasure of paging through Carolyn's pregnancy journal. It's very interesting that we were both due around the same time, so I got to catch a slight glimpse of what was to come. That being 1978, things were a bit different, and they didn't tell you what we know now about drinking. There were a few funny entries about some pretty strong "Glogg" and how she decided not to have any wine one night because it made her feel sort of sick. Very interesting to think back about and fun to tease Carolyn a bit too.
That afternoon we finally made it to see the newest HP movie. It was really good, but pretty dark. The weird part is there are a few sort of shaky camera moments that were making me motion sick. I had to look away from the screen more than once to snap out of it.
After the movie we went back to Carolyn's to say goodbye and pick up our things and headed on our way back to MN. The locksmith met us at the house and had us inside and heading to bed within minutes. HOORAY! It was slightly embarrassing that we had the same guy who changed the locks the first time, but hey, what are you going to do. We weren't about to break in - our new neighbors would probably have called the police on us.
With Thanksgiving 2010 complete, time to unpack!
