Happy Halloween everyone! Big news from Friday night, the house is OFFICIALLY ours! In fact, we’ve just finished the inspection (and met a few neighbors who didn’t realize that we didn’t actually live there yet and did not in fact have any candy. Sorry kids!)
Paul and I have just returned from a wonderful trip up to our friends Kevin and Ken’s cabin (aka lake home, no... lake mansion). We had a fabulous and VERY relaxing weekend in the most luxurious cabin we’ve ever seen. Thanks to Kevin & Ken for being fabulous hosts, excellent cooking and to everyone else for great conversation and good fun times!
We had gone up there with the full intention of not telling anyone our news. At least I thought I’d give it a try. So we stopped on the way and picked up a little N/A beer and sparkling cider just to help with the cover up (btw, N/A beer - not very good, and definitely not worth it). We arrived to the cabin pretty late due to a final walk-through of the house, but luckily they had saved dinner for us – the BEST ribs, potatoes, vegetables, it was a FEAST! And of course, we were offered wine. I casually just said I’d have some water. I continued to drink water as we sat around the table chatting.
Ken, being the gracious host he is, continued to ask if I was SURE that I didn’t want something, a glass of wine, a drink, etc. I finally told him my excuse that I had come up with, that I was trying out a “detox” at the time, so I wasn’t really drinking much. Ken, without missing a beat, chimed in with “what, are you pregnant?” I was so surprised he had guessed it so quickly that I wasn’t ready to deny it, which quickly confirmed his suspicion. So now 4 other friends knew the secret – Kevin, Ken, Diane and Brock. Thankfully, these are people who are pretty good at keeping secrets. We were able to cover up my news for the rest of the weekend with the N/A beer to the rest of the crowd there. Phew!
Sunday morning was a slow one to get up, as many of the folks there had gone a little crazy (I think Paul had 2 tequila shots in a row at one point). I won’t embarrass my friend Brock telling you about his acting out of “The Girl from Ipanema”, we’ll just say I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. So we got up quietly and read the papers and made some breakfast. In the paper was a great ad for HOM Furniture. In the ad was a great looking corner sofa on sale for $544. Too good to be true, I thought – the one at IKEA was at minimum $999. So on our way home, we went straight over to HOM furniture and on a whim bought a new sofa for the new house. Yeah, it was a pretty insane thing, but the price was right and we were going to need a second couch very soon. To be delivered on our move in date – can’t wait to see it!
Then we went straight to the new house for the inspection. Everything looks pretty good and our inspector was FANTASTIC! He told us all about the hot tub (yes, the 8 person hot tub, awesome!) and everything that could go wrong. There are some holes from some woodpeckers on the siding, a bush too close to the house, and the furnace is about 25 years old and will likely need replacing soon. Darn, but nothing more that was wrong, so we put a stipulation in the purchase agreement to have the furnace cleaned and serviced and called it good – we’re on our way to a new house! WA-HOO!
So, what did you get in your Trick or Treat bag? Paul and I got a house and a new couch. Crazy.
